Top 5 Garage Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring cleaning can be a cathartic experience, helping you to declutter and clean your home ahead of the new season. Sometimes, people miss out their garage during a spring clean, but giving your garage space a bit of a refresh can be equally as satisfying as the rest of your home.

In this article, the team here at Rollerdor will provide you with our top five garage spring cleaning tips to help make the process even easier.

Why Should you Spring Clean your Garage?

These days, garages are extremely versatile and are often converted into home offices, gyms and even game rooms. However, many of us still use garages for traditional purposes such as to store vehicles and as a place to keep tools, gardening equipment and other miscellaneous objects.

In these instances things can, inevitably, get a bit cluttered and a garage spring clean is a great way to restore some order to your garage without it becoming overwhelming.

5 Spring Cleaning Tips

If you’re looking for ways to make your garage spring cleaning more efficient, take a look at our top five cleaning tips below.

Remove everything from the garage

The first thing you should do is remove everything from your garage. This way, you’ll have a blank canvas to work with and it’ll make the whole cleaning process far easier to manage. With this in mind, it’s worth doing the clean on a nice day so you can leave your objects outside without having to worry about the cold or the rain.

Decide what you want to keep

Next, you should go through all of the objects you have in your garage and decide what you want to keep and what you’re happy to part with. For extra efficiency, you can even sort the items into different categories such as keep, recycle, sell, donate and throw away.

Garage cleaning

It might sound obvious, but a big part of garage spring cleaning is actually the cleaning. You should start by sweeping any dirt or debris out of the garage. This is particularly important if you use your garage to store vehicles as they often bring in all kinds of mess from the roads. You should also take some time to wipe down any shelves, surfaces and every nook and cranny in the garage. Make sure not to neglect your garage’s walls, and wipe away any dust or cobwebs that may have accumulated.

You should also wash the floor with a mop, either using hot, soapy water or a garage floor cleaner that you can purchase from your local hardware store. If any stubborn stains have appeared, such as oil from vehicles or garden equipment, a good tip is to scrub the stain using dishwasher detergent. You could also use lemon juice mixed with baking soda but you should never mix any bleach-containing detergents with baking soda as this can create a corrosive mixture.

Garage door cleaning

As well as cleaning the interior of your garage, you can also use the spring clean to clean the door itself.

Here at Rollerdor, we’re specialists in roller garage doors and so will concentrate on the best way to clean these types.

First, take some time to inspect the door for any damage or dents. While minor damage can usually be rectified, any significant issues may mean the door needs to be replaced so carefully review your door’s condition.

Then, check the guide runners to make sure they are clear of any debris or blockages and that the profile is straight and true.  Once you’ve done this, check the base rail rubber at the bottom of the door to check for any deformities.

The last part is a little more difficult as you will need to check the inlet guides, straps and, if applicable, safety break. To do this, you’ll need to remove the back case from the door, and then clear any build-up of debris that may have collated or collected dirt.

If you feel like this is too challenging for you, Rollerdor offers servicing for your roller garage door.

It is always advisable to clean your door every six to eight weeks, and if you live within seven miles of the seas every four weeks. This will stop the build-up of grime that can mark your door.

To do this use hot, soapy water and some mild non-bleach detergent. Never use a pressure washer as this can damage the door and ruin the paintwork.

Reorganise

Finally, reorganise your garage in an orderly fashion.

You could even install storage units, cabinets, pegboards and wall hooks to keep tools and equipment in a handy and easy-to-find place.
