Why Garage Door Insulation Matters
Since the start of 2019, the weather has taken every opportunity to leave us wondering ‘what’s next’? With storms Freya and Gareth whipping up ferocious winds, and the rain coming in torrents when we least expect it — not to mention various cold snaps — we’ve had a lot to put up with, and so have our garage doors! When the wind picks up and the rain lashes down, an older up and over garage door will find it hard to stand up against the elements, and part of this is down to insulation.
In this article, we’re looking at the benefits of our roller garage door insulation, and why it might be time to think about upgrading your garage door.
Roller doors vs up and overs
Up and over doors are, essentially, shaped sheets of metal which serve as a barrier between your garage and the outside world. However, these barriers are not as reliable or as durable as a roller garage door — especially after a few years. They can come loose and present an easier target for thieves. They are also harder to operate and require more maintenance than roller doors. One more important advantage of a roller door is insulation; up and over garage doors provide weak insulation, largely due to gaps around the edges. But with an insulated roller door, you’ll notice an immediate difference.
Our garage door insulation
All of our roller door models come with insulation built in as standard. Let’s take a look at the construction of insulation for our RD55 and RD77 door models.
- RD55 – With 55mm high, 8.2mm thick slats, the RD55 has a slimmer profile which makes it perfect for smaller garages. Insulation for this model is a lightweight foam that is 5mm-7mm thick.
- RD77 – With slats measuring 77mm high and 18mm thick, the RD77 is perfect for garages with larger openings. The foam insulation for this model — in order to account for the larger width of the door itself — is 12-17mm thick.
The benefits of roller door insulation
The insulation used in our roller doors provide our customers with a range of functional and lucrative benefits. Let’s take a look at the most important.
Thermal resistance – ‘Warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer’. Our foam insulation helps to maintain a comfortable temperature all year round — perfect if you use your garage for more than storage.
Watertightness – With greater temperature control — and improved resistance to water ingress — an insulated roller door helps to prevent humid conditions, safeguarding against the build up of mould in your garage, protecting your belongings and creating a cleaner, healthier internal environment.
Air permeability – Double skinned aluminium slats filled with foam insulation: a fantastic barrier to draughts. An up and over garage door would also let draughts through the gaps in the side of the door, but that’s not an issue with our insulated roller doors. Both RD55 and RD77 models protect your garage from wind and cold draughts, and insulation plays a massive part in this.
Noise reduction – Foam insulation is a great sound dampener, so whether you want to block out street noise or prevent noise leakage from the inside, our doors are fully equipped for the job.
And, as a complement to our reliable insulation, our roller doors come with robust weather sealing to bolster each of the above. With an insulated roller garage door from Rollerdor, you get the complete package.
