How Do Electric Garage Doors Lock?
Making sure that your garage door is as secure as possible is important – your garage may house your car, motorbike or gadgets, gizmos or tools and the prospect of replacing these high-value or sentimental items is not an idea many of us would be happy to entertain!
A basic, standard garage door with a manual key locking system might be good enough if your garage is mostly used to store clutter but for peace of mind, you may want to consider a different type of garage door – one with enhanced safety and security features.
When it comes to electric garage doors, it’s not all about how they look, they are growing in popularity in no small part due to the additional features on offer compared to standard up and over garage doors.
Why choose an electric garage door?
An electric garage door provides more control for the owner. You can customise entry to react to fingerprints or connect it to your smartphone or a keypad.
However, the benefit that most householders enjoy about having an electric garage door is that they do not require much manual handling at all, making them the ideal garage door solution for busy families, people with mobility problems and those who love their tech.
Are electric garage doors secure?
The addition of an electric motor and automated systems doesn’t mean you have to compromise on security. The main concern for security is that an automated system means the removal of the manual locking system. With Rollerdor electric garage doors, there is no need to worry as the curtain cannot be opened from the outside without the remote control (or an external manual over-ride handle) as there is no weakness or pivot point in the design.
How do Rollerdor electric garage doors work?
All Rollerdor electric garage doors come with locking straps. The number of straps that your door comes with depends on the size of the door with smaller doors employing three locking straps with the largest of doors coming with up to 8 locking straps.
These locking straps are contained within the top box so if you choose to have your door installed by us or one of our accredited installers, you may not even notice them!
Locking straps are made from small high performance plastic rectangles that are held together by metal pins. They move only one way, much like an elbow joint so they can roll up with your electric garage door’s curtain but movement is only in one direction. With your door limit set correctly, these locking straps push the curtain firmly into the ground and allow for no external movement once fully extended.
I installed the door myself and the locking strap doesn’t work, what should I do?
Sometimes, customers account for a little too much height for the garage door opening and this means that the locking straps are unable to fully extend and lock the door into place. In this situation, we advise customers to remove a slat from the curtain itself which usually resolves the issue.
