Can You Install a Garage Door on an Existing Frame?

If your existing garage door is starting to show signs of age, or if you’ve experienced a few problems with your garage door and you’ve decided it’s time for a new one, then you might be wondering if you can install a garage door yourself. In this article, the team at Rollerdor will look at whether or not you need a new frame with your garage door.

Do I need a new frame with my garage door?

Whether or not you need a new frame depends on the condition of your old one and the type of door you are installing. If your existing frame is in excellent condition, then you can consider installing your new garage door on it. However, if it’s less than excellent, or if there’s any sign of rot, then you need to change it before installing your new garage door. If your garage door has been in place for a long time, it’s likely that this is the case – if so, we advise that you don’t affix your garage door to your wooden frame, as it won’t have the requisite strength to hold the door in place.

If you have a steel frame, then you cannot re-use it with your new garage door. This is because the fittings and mechanisms for each door are different.

Roller Doors

If you have purchased a roller garage door, then the good news is that you don’t need a new frame to install it. Roller garage doors can affix to the brickwork opening of the garage, – either on the back of it or between. The motor is integral, so our roller garage doors can fit between two flat walls.

The lack of need for a frame is one of a number of benefits of roller garage doors. The aforementioned brickwork affixation presents a seamless look, and when this is combined with the gliding automation of the door, it makes for a sleek installation in every sense of the word.
