Keeping Your Garage Warm In Winter
With winter now well and truly on the way, people’s attention is inevitably turning to cosy nights in front of the TV, gathering with family and friends and maybe even the prospect of a white Christmas.
And while this time of year can be enjoyable for all kinds of reasons, the cold temperatures that go hand in hand with wintertime can be challenging.
It’s important to keep the inside of your property as warm as possible in order to repel cold air, prevent issues and make the space as comfortable as possible. As garages these days can be used for all manner of reasons (storage, home gyms, office spaces etc) it’s also important these areas are not neglected.
If a room is too cold, it can cause damage, make it uncomfortable to spend time in there and contribute to illnesses.
With this in mind, the team here at Rollerdor has put together a handy guide outlining some of the ways you can keep your garage warm this winter.
Keeping your Garage Warm in Winter
As already mentioned, keeping your garage warm during the winter months is extremely important. Whether you spend a lot of time in your garage or not, if this room is neglected when you’re heating your home, it can bring down the entire temperature of the property and see cold air sneak into other rooms of your house.
There are a few things you can do to keep your garage warm including:
- Seal walls and doors – Cold air can enter a garage through any gaps in the walls, personnel doors or your garage door. Therefore, having garage doors that come with seals can help to prevent cold air from entering the property. Some garage door types are better suited to this than others. For example, roller garage doors and sectional garage doors come with rubber seals on the bottom of the door and the close directly onto the floor. In contrast, up and over garage doors and side-hinged garage doors swing to close meaning they need a small gap for this to happen effectively. These can be improved with protective seals to help to minimise this, but over time these seals can become worn and let draughts in. With this in mind, it’s always worth checking your seals are still in good condition and replacing them if necessary. With personnel doors, it is best to seal around the sides and top with foam tape to give a better seal and at the bottom a brush seal can help whilst still giving you ease of opening and closing.
- Consider caulking – Staying on the theme of sealing gaps, and in addition to protective seals you might want to consider caulking gaps that have appeared in garage walls. Even the smallest gap can contribute to a freezing garage, so make sure all gaps are sealed. Caulking will especially come in handy if your garage features a window that cold air is entering through.
- Install a heater – Of course, one way to guarantee your garage is kept warm is by installing a heater inside. However, this is not usually very cost-effective due to the increase in both gas and electricity prices.
In addition to the tips outlined above, the two best ways to keep your garage warm during winter are to upgrade your garage door or add garage insulation.
Let’s take a closer look at these options.
Upgrade your Garage Door
Perhaps the biggest problem that causes garages to get cold is the door itself.
Even garage doors that have fairly good insulating properties can deteriorate over time, and start allowing cold air into the property. With this in mind, upgrading to a new, quality garage door is a great way to ensure your garage space remains warm.
Most modern garage doors are made from quality materials that can provide insulation, and you can even get specialist insulated garage doors if you want to make absolutely sure that your door is doing the job.
Garage Insulation
Insulation is a material that’s used in a property to reduce the amount of heat that is lost and prevent cold air from coming in.
While your entire property should have been properly insulated when it was built, the age and design of the house can influence this. Furthermore, garages can sometimes be neglected when it comes to insulation.
With this in mind, ensuring your garage is properly insulated is possibly the best way to keep it warm. Make sure the walls, floor and roof are properly insulated. All of the doors we provide at Rollerdor come with double skinned foam insulation and they can help improve the warmth of the garage itself as well as rooms above and adjoining the garage.
