How to Keep Your Garage Cool In Summer

For many people, summer is the best time of the year. A season of barbecues, holidays and spending time outdoors, most Brits will be hoping for clear skies and high temperatures this summer.

And while the summer months undoubtedly bring a range of benefits, the scorching temperatures can make garages hot, sticky and unpleasant.

While you may think this is unavoidable, there are actually a number of things you can do to keep your garage cool in the summer.

The team here at Rollerdor has compiled a list of ways you can ensure your garage remains cool this summer.

Reasons Why Garages Get Hot During Summer

While the high temperatures that the summer months bring are clearly the main reason why garages get hot at this time of year, there are a number of factors that can exacerbate the heat.

These include:

  • The garage’s location – the sun’s heat is more severe during the afternoon and garages that face in a westerly direction will bear the brunt of this.
  • The colour of your garage door – darker colours conduct heat, while lighter ones reflect it. This means garages with darker-coloured doors are more likely to experience more oppressive temperatures.
  • Garages without ventilation – a good ventilation system will distribute hot air evenly and ensure it doesn’t remain in one area. Without this, garages can get hotter.

These are just a few of the reasons why garages can get unpleasantly hot during the summer, but there are a number of things you can do to counteract this.

How To Keep Your Garage Cool

There are a whole host of ways that you can keep your garage cool during the summer months, such as:

1. Choose Lighter-Coloured Doors

As mentioned above, the colour of your garage doors will impact how much heat it experiences. If you’re particularly concerned about this, opt for lighter colours that reflect heat – especially if your property faces west. At Rollerdor, we always personalise our products to our clients’ needs and are able to provide them access to a wide range of garage door colours.

2. Park Vehicles Outside

Some people use their garage to park their vehicles inside, but in the summer months it might be wise to consider leaving it outside. This is because vehicles that have been recently used radiate heat – meaning your garage’s temperature is likely to increase if you park it in the garage.

However, it’s also important to note keeping it outside for too long can cause the interior of the vehicle to increase and it can be quite hot when it comes to using it later. With this in mind, consider what your priorities are when it comes to vehicle storage.

3. Install Fans

An effective way to cool down your garage is to install fans. This can take the form of a high-powered ceiling fan to ensure better ventilation, but if you don’t want to spend a lot even a simple pedestal fan will do the trick.

The price of electricity has increased significantly in recent months and years, so it might be worth considering what is the best option for your budget.

4. Consider Air Conditioning

If you’re willing to spend a bit more money, installing air conditioning in the garage is the best way to keep it cool. If you have the budget and the space, a fully fitted central air conditioning system will be able to pump cool air into the room to keep it at a suitable temperature. This is especially worthwhile if you spend a lot of time in your garage, for example, if you use it as an office space.

5. Make Sure Your Doors Have Good Insulation

While you might associate insulation with cold weather, having well insulated garage doors can help in the summer, too. This is because good insulation will help your garage maintain its cool air and stop it from escaping outside.

6. Declutter The Garage

You might be surprised to learn that having a garage that’s free of clutter can actually help keep it cool. While many people use their garage as a storage space, having stacked boxes and items crammed into the space can actually retain heat and keep your garage’s temperature high.

At Rollerdor, we’ve spent years supplying and installing high-quality roller garage doors for customers across the country. As roller garage door specialists, we offer a nationwide service, free site surveys and a minimum two-year warranty on all our excellent products that are manufactured right here in the UK.
